Stitch with us with our Goldwork Embroidery Classes

Golden Stitches Everytime

Goldwork is an ancient art and we as a company are passionate to bring this art to a larger audience as well as bring more modern techniques to the craft.

We hold regular Goldwork classes to share our knowledge, share ideas, make friends and create fabulous pieces of work. Our classes are fortnightly in our dedicated studio in Warrington Cheshire, and we have between 6-12 ladies in a class, we all gather together and encourage each other to create unique pieces of art. Below are some examples of work created in our classes

What is Goldwork Embroidery?

Goldwork embroidery is one of the most luxurious and historic forms of needlework — a shimmering art that has adorned royal garments, military regalia, and religious textiles for centuries. It is a specialist form of hand embroidery that uses real metal threads or metallic-coated threads to create rich, raised designs. Traditionally, threads were made from real gold or silver, wrapped around silk or paper cores. Today, modern versions use affordable materials that still give the same radiant effect.

Teaching the Basics

Like many embroidery skills learning the basics is important once you have mastered this then more complicated techniques can be achieved. This doesn’t mean that we don’t challenge our class members but we support and encourage to master the basics so that the confidence grows.

The Couching Stitch

Couching is the main stitch that you would use in Goldwork, Goldwork is primarily laid threads and wires, with the threads being couched down. This technique is an easy one to learn and master, you simply come up on one side of the thread and go down on the other. It is getting your stitches neat and even that is the tricky part, this technique is used for the majority of threads but can be adapted for different effects, you can use invisible thread such at Translucent thread or a coloured thread like 1 strand of stranded cotton to give a contrasting colour. You can do the stitches straight, at an angle or in a brick format.
