What is Art Nouveau?

Art Nouveau literally means ‘new art. Art Nouveau is an ornamental style of art. It was very popular between 1890’s and 1910’s throughout Europe and the United States. Art Nouveau is characterized by its use of a long, sinuous, organic lines. Examples of Art Nouveau can be seen all around us in architecture, interior design, jewellery, posters, and illustrations.
Artists involved in Art Nouveau wanted to create modern art for the modern age. The turn of the century was coming, the world was changing, and the artists, designers and architects who championed Art Nouveau wanted to abandon the rule-laden styles of the past.
Drawing inspiration from both organic and geometric forms, creating elegant designs that united flowing, natural forms resembling the stems and blossoms of plants. Concentrating on strong linear contours took precedence over colour, which was usually represented with hues such as muted greens, browns, yellows, and blues.
A famous artist from the Art Nouveau period is Gustav Klimt, he famously said, “Enough of censorship…I refuse every form of support from the state, I’ll do without all of it,” – he said this as he was attacked for his work’s swirling erotic forms, he went on pioneer his Gold Period – which one of the highlights of Art Nouveau. Gustav Klimt’s work is popular within goldwork.
There are many wonderful examples of Art Nouveau in Architecture including Glasgow School of Art in Scotland where the most famous of their building were designed by Charles Reenie Mackintosh and Casa Batlló in Barcelona which was designed by Antoni Gaudí who designed many of the buildings in Barcelona, but there are many more around the world. To identify an Art Nouveau building characteristics are shapes drawn from nature, like insects, birds, graceful plant forms and especially whiplash curves which are ribbon-like rays that bend back on themselves. Structures are often asymmetrical, so their sides are not always balanced. Doors and windows quite often have sloping arches that echo organic forms.
