Meet The Team
Sarah is the owner of Golden Hinde. Her love of gold work and many other embroidery techniques can be seen in each piece of work crafted by her and her enthusiasm shines through when talking about or teaching Goldwork techniques.
“My love of gold work started whilst watching my mum for many years, designing clothes and making costumes for school plays. She worked on a banner for my school for two years, all worked in gold work this banner is paraded with my old school St Thomas’s every walking day displaying its beauty as it ripples in the sunshine to this day”
At the age of 14, Sarah studied Textiles GCSE, at which she achieved the highest grade (A). Sarah also attained an Art “A” level and over the years has developed her interest in embroidery and sewing by making and designing her own clothes and patterns.
Sarah also attended University and achieved a degree in business and financial management and as a result is also a Chartered Accountant.
Sarah is married to Stephen and has two children John and William.
Sarah is also a recommended Embroiderers Guild tutor and runs our regular classes in Warrington dubbed “The Golden Wonders” in which we have a group of ladies who create wonderful masterpieces for pleasure and exhibitions.
You can find more information about our regular Goldwork classes by clicking HERE Our classes are very popular and we often have waiting lists.
The day to day running of the office is mainly done by Kate, she is the one you would normally talk to on the phone or would e-mail you back, if she doesn’t know the answer to a query she always knows someone who does.
Kate has been at Golden Hinde since September 2013, she started with very little experience in embroidery – other than seeing her Mum create cross-stitch pieces – but has learnt so much in her time here, she was even convinced to attend some Goldwork classes to give her a better understanding when dealing with customers. Kate has now found a love for goldwork completing some more modern (if unusual) pieces including Woody from Toy Story, showing that Goldwork is versatile, and that anyone can give it a go.
Kate has a daughter Matilda, who has also shown an interest in sewing along with Sarah’s two boys.
Sue is the newest member of our office team, starting with us in March 2019. Sue will be answering the telephone and putting all your orders together. She is new to the Goldwork world and has a lot to learn but has slotted into the team nicely, we are hoping that she will be able to attend some classes to enable her to understand what all the different threads and wires are used for so that she will be able to answer e-mail or telephone questions.
Sue has two grown up daughters who are also called Sarah and Kate.
Eileen is a member of our packing team she makes up kits and packs as well as cutting silk and material ready to be sent out.
Eileen also attends our regular Goldwork classes on a Tuesday as well as making beautiful creations in our classes Eileen has tried her hand at many different embroidery skills.
Ida is a member of our packing team, Ida is also Kate’s mum which made her ideally placed to help us as we have got busier. She makes up Kits and packs, including all of our individual threads and wires. Ida also helps out by taking our post to the post office for us.
Ida attends our regular Goldwork classes but on a Monday, in addition to her amazing Goldwork creations, Ida has completed many pieces in Cross-stitch and has since tried whitework.
Golden Hinde - family
Golden Hinde is very much a family run business and since Kate joined the team, both Sarah and Kate have become very good friends as well as colleagues and we believe that they make a very good team.
Sarah and Kate also attend regular garment making classes together, at a local sewing school creating clothes and making patterns.
We are very lucky to also have the support of Sarah’s parents Jim and Sue. Jim is a great support to Sarah at shows, he chats to customers and helps to complete sales. With Goldwork being such a Niche and specialised market we like to demonstrate what can be done, Sue helps with this, sewing a project or sample to show what can be done, passing on her expertise.
Where possible we like to hold classes at shows that we attend, these classes are always taught by our in house tutor Sarah Rakestraw.
Sarah also hosts special one off classes for others such as Embroiderers guilds, and most recently for Phillipa Turnbull and her team at the crewelwork company. Georgina Pillsbury from her team wrote this lovely piece about her experience learning Goldwork and of Sarah as a tutor, you can read her piece here crewelwork company review
Golden Hinde - commisions
Here at Golden Hinde we do occasionally take on a commission, at the beginning of 2019 we started on a commission for our local school to complete a banner, you can see our story here School banner
